Work Less Wednesday: October 15

👋 Hey Reader!

This is issue #176 of Work Less Wednesday, where I share with you 5 things you should know about, in 5 minutes or less. That leaves you with 10,075 other minutes this week.

🧭 1. Writing I Like - Your Inner Compass: Restoring Lost Intelligence by Patrick McAndrew

Nuanced and important Substack post by my friend Patrick McAndrew on how modern technology impacts our ability to tap into important inner signals from our body.

Modern products are addictive - by design!

Over time, they condition into subconscious habit loops we have little control over.

As a result, our ability to feel and sense messages from our bodies is greatly diminished.

Most entrepreneurs are so detached from their bodies that don’t realize there is a whole world of information coming in from our bodies, FASTER than thought arrives.

It lives in the body, in the racing heart, the tightening gut, the sudden calm that settles in before a decision. These physical signals register truth or danger long before the mind has time to weigh the evidence.

John Coates’ book The Hour Between Dog and Wolf studied the biology and habits of high level Wall Street traders and revealed the same thing:

“Our best decisions aren’t just made by the brain. They’re felt by the whole organism.”

Abandoning our inner compass means we end up disconnected from what we want and what we need.

Way back in 1971, Abraham Maslow said:

Recovering the self must include the recovery of the ability to have and to cognize these inner signals, to know what and whom one likes and dislikes, what is enjoyable and what is not, when to eat and when not to, when to sleep, when to urinate, when to rest. The experientially empty person, lacking these directives from within…must turn to outer cues for guidance…he guides himself by clocks, rules, calendars, schedules, agenda, and by hints and cues from other people.

As we continue to engage with AI tools and products continue to become more addictive, I believe the best entrepreneurs will be the ones who can tap into this internal wisdom.

🛠️ 2. 37 Tools and Tactics to Protect Your Attention - Article by Matt Richardson

When it comes to protecting your attention, willpower is not enough.

To compliment up Patrick’s article above, here’s some tactical stuff to help you protect your attention.

As someone who has gone down the rabbit hole on this topic, I found a TON of new tools I’ve never heard of.

👍 3. In Defense Of Liking Your Own Posts - Note by Stacy Jago

Came across this short post online this week:

It got me thinking about conviction and advocating for your work.

I get it - people say it’s uncool to like your own posts.

But if you're don't "like" your stuff, how can you expect anyone else to?

💨 4. Air Purifier We’re Loving - Air Doctor

After suffering for years, my wife was somewhat recently diagnosed with MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome), which is connected to her main diagnosis Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.

MCAS in layman's terms means her body is allergic to a bunch of stuff: fragrances, mold, pollen, smoke, dust, chemicals, etc.

As a result we’ve been trying to get an air purifier to improve our indoor air quality.

We’ve tested a bunch of products and the Air Doctor has been the best BY FAR for us.

Not only does it have serious 3 stage filtration, including a HEPA filter and activated carbon filter, it also doesn’t off-gas as much as most products coming straight from a factory do.

And it's quiet.

We currently have two units the 3500 and 5500, and plan to have one on every floor of our home.

If you’re even the slightest bit health conscious, I can’t recommend it enough.

Check it out here.

💬 Quote I’m Pondering…

“You must have a room, or a certain hour or so a day, where you don’t know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don’t know who your friends are, you don’t know what you owe anybody, you don’t know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be. This is the place of creative incubation. At first you may find that nothing happens there. But if you have a sacred place and use it, something eventually will happen.”
― Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth
