Work Less Wednesday: December 17

👋 Hey Reader!

This is issue #184 of Work Less Wednesday, where I share with you 5 things you should know about, in 5 minutes or less. That leaves you with 10,075 other minutes this week.

🧠 1. A Couple Of Places I’m Going For Inspiration Right Now

Recently I've been finding feeds and algorithms a terrible place to find interesting stuff to consume.

It seems like the stuff they're optimizing for (things to keep you scrolling) aren't the things I'm interested in.

To that end, I've been leaning much more into human-curated content.

As AI continues its march forward, I think there's going to be a lot more interest in human curation in the coming years.

Here are three sites/tools I’ve been enjoying lately:

🛹 2. Rob Dyrdek’s New "Whole Life Tracking" App - YouTube Video

video preview

Pro skater Rob Dyrdek popped up in my feed with a new venture…

Turns out he’s been tracking his time for over a decade and is launching some kind of new life tracking app called Existence.

I’ve been an advocate for strategic time and money tracking. I believe it’s a great way to move from vagueness to clarity in your business.

BUT I think Existence’s premise goes too far.

At a certain point, the tracking becomes obsessive, and we lose our ability to check in with our internal compass and assess how or why we do the things we do.

It all becomes data.

This video explains it perfectly.

For example, take sleep trackers like the Oura ring:

At first we learn very valuable patterns from the data, like:

  • “How does eating before bed affect my sleep?”
  • “How much deep sleep am I getting?”
  • “How much sleep am I actually having each night?”

But eventually it backfires.

Instead of checking in with ourself in the morning to ask “How do I FEEL?” - we turn that power over to the app and base our feelings on a sleep score.

Anyway, here’s Rob's app if you’re interested.

🍉 3. The Most Insane Coffee I’ve Tasted - WWE Super Blend from People Posession

Shared this with my clients this week, but it deserves a wider mention.

This experimental coffee is co-fermented with watermelon, and it literally tastes like watermelon candy.

I’ve talked about co-ferments before in WLW, but this one is the cleanest I’ve ever tasted.

People Possession is a roaster from Paris they just started stocking at my local cool coffee shop Pollen.

I’ve also got PP’s Elto Elora, which I’ll be trying next.

Check out the roasters here.

🧱 4. Tool I’m Back Using - Brick

Recently I’ve been craving some more boundaries with my phone.

So it’s back to old faithful - The Brick.

Originally started using this in December 2023.

Here’s how it works:

This $49 device essentially bricks your phone.

“A device that temporarily removes distracting apps (and their notifications) from your phone - leaving only the powerful tools you choose.

Now you don’t have to take the distractions with you everywhere - leave them behind with the Brick, and engage with more of what matters.”

Right now I’m bricking: Instagram, YouTube, Substack, Gmail, and a handful of distracting websites.

I’ve recommended this to hundreds of readers and clients and it seems to have pretty good success.

Grab a Brick here.
