Work Less Wednesday: February 11

👋 Hey Reader!

This is issue #189 of Work Less Wednesday, where I share with you 5 things you should know about, in 5 minutes or less. That leaves you with 10,075 other minutes this week.

📤 1. My Substack Got Hacked - The Latest Update

My Substack got hacked 😵

Yesterday around 4pm I got an email that my Substack account email address had been changed.

Fortunately I noticed it quickly, but in under two hours the damage was done.

  1. Locked out of my account.
  2. My list of emails/followers was deleted and replaced with a spam list.
  3. In the process, $5,600 of paid subscriptions were refunded.

I was able to get ahold of customer support, who graciously helped with #1.

BUT #2 and #3 are still unresolved.

PAID SUBSCRIBERS:

If you are a paid subscriber, you got an email telling you you were refunded for ~$200.

That transaction is still pending.

Ideally we get it resolved before it goes through, but if not I will be reaching out to you individually to get you resubscribed so please keep a lookout.

Will share more on my IG if anything else comes up!

Bummer!

❗ 2. A Message For Artists & Entrepreneurs - Artists Don’t Fail Because They’re Bad

Killer IG reel I came across this week:

“A record producer in L.A. said most musicians don’t fail because they’re bad. They fail because their nervous system can’t survive the industry.

He said the biggest myth in music is that success depends on exposure. “No,” he said. “It depends on whether your body can handle being unseen longer than you expected.”

Most artists quit not because they’re untalented, but because their brain interprets silence as danger. The industry doesn’t break voices; it breaks nervous systems.

Emotional durability is the ability to create when the numbers drop, to write when no one cares, to perform after rejection number 47—or 447, or 4,000,047. It’s staying human when algorithms treat you like a product.

He said 90% of rising artists crumble not from hate, but from the invisible weight of being ignored.”

🍎 3. App My Wife & I Are Using For Grocery Lists - AnyList

This is a simple one, but in our house this has always been a problem:

“What do you want me to get at the grocery store?”

Finally solved it by creating shared shopping lists in AnyList.

Now we have a shared list that both of us can access on our phones to add items to over the course of the week as we run out/use stuff.

Then when it comes time to go to the store, the list is ready to go.

Game changer.

And it’s free.

Check it out here.

💀 4. Cool Things I Learned About This Week - Emergo & The Ennis House

This past week, my wife was watching the movie, The House on Haunted Hill from 1959.

In it, there’s this iconic scene at the end where a skeleton emerges from a tub of acid.

But what's really crazy is that the director set up a special effect where a skeleton dummy would descend from the ceiling over the audience in every theater that showed the film.

Director William Castle called this movie gimmick “Emergo.”

I wish we had more weird stuff like that.

On top of that, House on Haunted Hill is notable because of where it’s filmed.

It’s filmed in a house in Los Angeles that was designed by one of my favorite architects, Frank Lloyd Wright.

The home is often known as the “Blade Runner House” or “The Ennis House.”

It is iconic due to its interesting structure, drawing inspiration from Mayan temples.

You’ve probably seen it in Blade Runner, Game of Thrones, and hundreds of other films.

Surprised by how much interesting stuff came from a 1959 horror movie.
