🎣3. Business Parable I Love - The Fisherman & The Banker
I thought this was one of those entrepreneur stories that everyone knows.
But I shared it with one of my clients this week - I was shocked they had never heard it.
So I’m sharing for all of you who may have never heard it:
🎣 The Fisherman & 💼 The Banker
An American banker was vacationing in a small Mexican village when he saw a fisherman dock with a few large yellowfin tuna.
“Great catch,” said the banker. “How long did it take?”
“Only a little while,” the fisherman replied.
“Why not stay out longer and catch more?”
“I have enough to support my family.”
“But what do you do with the rest of your time?” the banker asked.
“I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siestas with my wife Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my friends. I have a full and busy life.”
The banker scoffed. “I’m a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing, and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats, eventually have a fleet. Instead of selling to a middleman, you could sell directly to a processor and eventually open your own cannery. You could control the product, processing, and distribution.”
He continued, “Of course, you’d need to leave this small coastal village and move to Mexico City, then LA, then maybe New York City, where you’d run your growing enterprise.”
The fisherman asked, “But how long will this all take?”
“Fifteen to twenty years,” the banker replied.
“But then what?”
The banker smiled. “Then you’d sell the company, make millions, and retire. You could move to a small coastal village where you could sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siestas with your wife, and play guitar with your friends…”
